The band was having much greater success in America at the time and this inspired them to use the North American sound rather than the British sound. To get the sound just right, the band called to an office in America in when they knew no one would answer. First, the ringback tone heard (as one would hear when waiting for the line to pick up) is a North American ringback tone which is quite distinctive from that heard in the U.K. Telephone Effects: The telephone intro for the song has drawn a lot of attention over the years. The early working title was Bad Salad Telephone (a play on the term “sad ballad”), so it appears that the telephone theme was an early concept for the song. Just before release, other minor edits (including the muted telephone intro) were done at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles, California, USA. The orchestra was recorded later at De Lane Lea Studios, Wembley, England. This recording was for the backing track only. Telephone Line was originally recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany during July of 1976. Lynne once said that ELO will “Pick up where ‘I Am the Walrus’ left off.” Telephone Line peaked at #8 in the Billboard 100, #7 in the UK and #1 in Canada in 1977. In my opinion, he can write super catchy songs without being sugary. Jeff Lynne is one of the best pop/rock songwriters. Most of all.I could pick about any ELO song and do fine. A place in time were the ideal world he imagined for his love comes crashing down in front of him never to see the light of dayĪnd now, all he could truly do was express his loneliness.his love. A place where passion and idealism go to die. Now he is in twilight- a place between reality and fantasy. After all that time elapsed, he calls her only to be left with the lonely sound of a telephone ringing. It is about a man who needed some time off from his sweetheart but still loves her deeply. The story of telephone line in my opinion goes like this: But then he mentions how he needed some time. And then the part that is truly whats going on in his life is the most impactful chorus line repeated multiple times to provide the needed emphasis The "love u need"- said to himself and the " little things" - not always will it be ideal reality he pictured. He imagined a life with but her but then realizes that not everything will go the way he wants it to go. Imagine a lonely man staring out all alone telling himself this. And then he says how the " love u need aint gonna see through" and " the little things you planned aint coming true" unlike the things he wanted to say to her, he tells this to himself. He wanted to express his love for her but at the same time.he was lonely. And then " doop and doolang" and " blue days, black nights" moments I feel is the most impactful. Pure unconditional love for those.special moments. And then he says that " all the things we did were all for real not a dream" implying that all the good memories and feelings for both him and his sweetheart were real to him. And then" that's what I would've told u" meaning he was never able to truly express himself. Then, he begins to tell us the things he would've said to her."hello, how are u" " have u been alright to all those lonely lonely lonely nights" he only wanted to express his love and compassion to that special someone and show that he still truly cares for her. He waits and waits only to be comforted by the cold deafening silence of the telephones ringing. All he wanted was that special someone in his life to pick up so he can share his thoughts with her. I mean consider the begins with the telephone ringing suggesting someones trying to reach a friend, a family member or what I like to think of, a sweetheart.
